Doña Luz carries the right name: she is full of light, energy and a great sense of humour. A fun fact about her is that before becoming a coffee farmer, she worked at a funeral home. When I asked her what it was like working there, she simply replied, “It was fine. I’m much more afraid of the living.”
In 2012, she inherited her parents’ farm and started growing corn, beans, plantains, many different fruits and coffee.
Her washed Castillo cups nicely, but we felt it might be difficult to achieve an attractive premium with this profile. So we suggested trying a natural process, and the results have been very positive, both in terms of additional income for her and as a learning experience. With all her energy and curiosity, Doña Luz is always keen to learn and try new things.
